Kay Sutherland studied music for two years at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and then transferred to the University of Tulsa, where she received a B.A. in music education. She played cello for the Tulsa Philharmonic while in college and lived there for three years. She then moved back to Columbia, reared her four children and continued playing and practicing music. “I have always loved playing and I have never stopped,” she said. “I still need to practice every day.”
In 1969, her family relocated to Fresno and she quickly became immersed in the local music scene. She joined the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra as a cellist and began, what has come to be, a 32-year music-teaching career at Fresno’s Central Unified School District. “Moving to California was a big transition. I was homesick and I missed people,” Sutherland recalled. “Now you can’t get me out of Fresno.”
Throughout the years, she has played with the St. Louis Symphony, Tulsa Philharmonic and Tulare Symphony, and has traveled extensively because of music. Music has transported her throughout the United States, Japan, Korea, Puerto Rico, Germany, Switzerland and the Azores. She has played with many great conductors including Stokowski, Golschmann, and Mehta. “I was thrilled to play with all of those conductors,” she said, “I also enjoy being with other musicians and I like hearing the beautiful music.”
When Sutherland is not busy with music, she spends time with her three sons, daughter and close friends. She also enjoys sewing, exercising, and loves the comfort of her home. “I am happy with my life at the moment…I really enjoy my jobs and I like being in the thick of things.”
